How to Grow and Care for Bougainvillea

What is bougainvillea?
Bougainvillea plants (the generic name is also bougainvillea) are thorny, tropical vines, shrubs, and trees that commonly have fuchsia-colored bracts (special leaves surrounding the actual flower) and thrive in warm climates, such as their native South America and some parts of Argentina. You can also find them in southern Florida, Arizona, southern Texas, and southern California.

The most common bougainvillea species are Bougainvillea glabra and Bougainvillea spectabilis. Both species have variegated bracts, which can vary in hue depending on the cultivar or cultivar. However, these bracts do not photosynthesize like other leaves because they are used to protect the tiny white flowers at their center, which are the true flowers.

Bougainvillea, members of the four o’clock plant family (Nyctaginacae), are drought tolerant, disease resistant, and easy to grow. Bougainvillea are hardy and can be grown as groundcover in hanging baskets, on a trellis or even in pots as houseplants
